March 30, 2026 Announcement/Update
March 30, 2026

Over the past few months, Duel Commander has seen significant changes, several bans and a wave of unbans. The format currently appears to us as healthy and diverse, with a wide range of viable archetypes. We do note a present preference for blue midrange and control strategies, most notably Spider-Man 2099 and Tasigur, the Golden Fang. That said, we believe these strategies remain attackable by various decks and do not, on their own, crowd out other archetypes from existing. The metagame therefore strikes us as both healthy and genuinely challenging. Games involving these decks also tend to be strategically rich, leaving players on both sides of the table with meaningful decisions that directly influence the outcome. We also observe that the format's current pace gives innovation-minded players ample room to exercise their deckbuilding skills and bring new ideas to the community. Commanders such as Toph, Greatest Earthbender; Raph & Mickey, Troublemakers; Brigid, Clachan's Heart; Ellie, Brick Master; and Ashling, the Limitless have all stepped into the spotlight in recent months. More broadly, as the density of new releases continues to grow, we feel the format remains largely uncharted, and we believe there is still substantial room for fresh discoveries.

In our last announcement, we decided to unban Trazyn the Infinite, Necrotic Ooze, and Tasigur, the Golden Fang. While the first two have seen only modest play, Tasigur has established itself as a prominent Command Zone in the format. Our goal with that unban was to reinvigorate the control archetype, an objective that, to date, appears to have been met. The Command Zone has seen a range of builds, from midrange to combo, though the control variant currently seems to be the preferred approach. Furthermore, while Tasigur appears to have become the go-to control commander, older control options such as Tivit, Seller of Secrets and Atraxa, Grand Unifier continue to see play at roughly the same levels as before the unban, and a new control deck: Hei Bai, Forest Guardian, has emerged in the meantime. We will continue to monitor Tasigur's trajectory and will provide an update on its development in the coming months.

Finally, we believe the metagame is far from settled, and that many outcomes remain uncertain. While the current frontrunners appear to revolve around Spider-Man 2099, Tasigur the Golden Fang, the two Mono White commanders (Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd and Cloud, Midgar Mercenary), Lumra, Bellow of the Woods, and Slimefoot and Squee, many options remain open and the metagame continues to feel fluid. These factors lead us to refrain from any sweeping changes to the format, and to propose only a single update (grounded in a EDH rules decision) namely the creation of a new ban category, "Banned as Companion Only", and the placement of Lutri, the Spellchaser from fully banned to this new category.

Lutri, the Spellchaser

Lutri, the Spellchaser

As we did last July when we allowed legendary vehicles and legendary spaceships to be played as commanders, we reaffirm our commitment to aligning Duel Commander with Commander rules wherever it is reasonable to do so, in order to improve accessibility and support the format's growth. We are therefore introducing the new "Banned as Companion Only" category. Lutri, the Spellchaser was banned solely due to its companion ability, and we do not consider it a threat to the format's balance either as a Command Zone or as part of the main deck. Accordingly, Lutri becomes the first card to be placed in this new category. Lutri, the Spellchaser is now legal as commander and in the main deck.
